Farewell Louis

Louis in May 2001

Yesterday, the 18th of May 2004 I had to put my best mate and companion of the last 11 years to rest. Louis was a Red Doberman, and was the most beatiful natured creature you could ever meet. The day I first met him he was one day short of six weeks old. I went to look at a litter of red Dobe pups, as I had been introduced to one named Tex a few months prior, and I wanted a companion for my female Weimeraner. Whilst sitting looking at the entire litter of about 10 red pups, I felt a scratching on my shin and looked down. Here was a little red hippopotamus with a cute little ridgeback like bit of hair on the back of his neck, pawing at my leg. I knew straight away - he had already chosen me. It took me a few days to decide on his name. He was named after his creator - Louis Doberman, who was a German tax collector in the late 1800's. He wanted a powerful, but strongly loyal dog and cross bred a variety of dogs to create the Doberman Pincher. Louis has been with me constantly ever since, for the best part of one third of my life, and most of my adult life. He has enriched my life, provided absolute devotion and companionship and unconditional love. He helped me through some difficult times, and was there for the good ones. No-one who ever met Louis went away without falling in love with him. For those who have have ever spent time with a Doberman will know and understand the bond these beautiful natured and often incorrectly stereotyped dogs can create with you - they are really the biggest sook in the canine species.

Rest in Peace Louis. It has been an honour, a privilege and a pleasure being your pal. I miss you terribly, and will never forget you.
